The José María Córdoba (JMC) international airport is located about 40 kilometres from Medellin. The route between the airport and the city has excellent roads, but it’s a long and curvy ride with many inclinations caused by the mountainous terrain. The 40 kilometre journey to and from the JMC airport takes around one hour (or more at the peak traffic hours). The road is likely to have a lot of traffic as the route to and from the airport is also used by locals that live outside of Medellin and travel to and from their offices. On the contrary, the local Olaya Herrera Airport is located inside the city, but only operates limited domestic flights.
There are different options to get from the airport to Medellin. The cheapest option is by bus. They leave from the airport every 30 minutes or so, and will drop you off behind the Nutibara Hotel in the center of the city. You can easily identify these buses as there is usually a line of people waiting for them outside the airport. It’s the cheapest option, but for passengers with large suitcases, or if you’re travelling in a group, not always the most comfortable option. Also, the drop off location – especially at night – is not considered one of the safest places in Medellin.
Another option are the white ‘shared’ taxis. They drop you off or depart from the San Diego shopping center. For some, the downside of this option is that taxis do not start their journey until they fill up all the available seats (which makes your departure time a bit unpredictable).
In both cases (bus and white taxi) the service goes from the city of Medellín to the JMC Airport and vice versa, but none of them will take you to the door of your hotel (you must take an additional taxi once you are in the city)
The Medellin Airport Transfer service
